Domestic Bliss Baby Girl Quilt

I ♥ Domestic Bliss by Liz Scott for Moda!!  It's such a cheerful, happy collection!

Outdoor pictures accent a quilt's stitching much more than indoor pics.  I quilted this little lovely in straight lines on both sides of all seams.  Straight lines also made a really neat grid on the back, which is made from one of the rectangular fabrics you see in the quilt top.

Set on point is more effort than straight squares, but I ♥ the triangles along the edges.

The shopping cart has a story, you know.  When we purchased our property, it had a row of blackberry bushes 15 feet high, 30 feet wide, and 450 feet long {no exaggeration either!}.  Mr.Hearts demolished the huge overgrowth with his tractor and found this lovely shopping cart in the blackberry bushes.  I snagged it for the front porch as a memory of the blackberry bushes.

Looks great over the rainbow quilt that is on MY bed!

Here is a close-up of the scrappy binding - my favorite way to bind a quilt!

A Quilt For My Mom {and a peek at my next quilt!}

My parents recently got a new RV, and my mom asked me to make a quilt to cover the glaring black TV screen and to provide some decoration on that wall.  This year's models of RVs all seem to have black, brown, and gold upholstery, and she wanted to liven it up a bit.

We set off to the fabulous quilt shop in my hometown {you know, the one I mentioned before that has tons more fabric than the quilt shops in big 'ol Bellingham...?} and picked out five fabrics totaling 2 yards.  My mom had no requirements other than size, and I found it rather difficult to think of a pattern in the exact size she needed, which was approx 22" x 31".  The quilt is double-sided, and hopefully one of the sides suits her fancy, if not both!  I told her yesterday that I sent it off, and she was so excited!  I hope she remains enthused when she sees it!

The fabrics are fall-colored batiks.  There was one short 2.5" strip of fabric left after I finished the scrappy binding.  That is cutting it close!

There is a black piece of fabric attached to the long side to hang down the back of the TV.  This black piece has a rod pocket at the bottom in case it needs more weight to stay in place.  I also sent along some self-adhesive Velcro just in case it needed more support.

Two things I learned while sewing this project.  I learned already knew that I have a VERY hard time sewing fabric that is not my choice of colors, and this project confirmed that again.  I had to kick myself to get in there and sew on this project!  It was almost like darning socks!!!  I also learned that sewing with batik fabric is actually quite nice.  It is a little bit stiff and does not tend to bunch up under the needle when you come to a pin as regular cotton sometimes does.

And here is a peek at what I rewarded myself with for finishing this project!!

I cut into my Domestic Bliss by Liz Scott for Moda fat quarter bundle and made this super duper cheery baby quilt!  It is already sandwiched together with fusible batting, and hopefully I'll get some time to quilt and maybe even bind it tomorrow!  The backing is one of those rectangular fabrics.

I rearranged the squares after I took this picture.  Pictures tend to show where there is too much of one color.  I also like to look at quilts on my design wall in the evening light which is when the light/dark variations in a quilt top can be seen.  Sew fun!

Breath of Fire Zig Zag Quilt Top is Finished!

Second in line for Mrs.Singer's rails is this wild oversized lap quilt!  Does it remind you of a certain motorcycle??  It will be awesome in a man's den or a boy's cave!

My first-ever zig zag quilt was fun to make!  I used the strip piecing pattern rather than half-square triangles.  I plan to do an all-over meandering stitch on her him even though she he is screaming straight-line quilting, because the quilt top is just too big for this girl to tackle on Mrs.Bernina and is much better suited to Mrs.Singer's long-arm rails.  Do you know of a guy who would care about the way its quilted anyway?

Found the perfect backing at Marie Madeline Studio's recent Birthday Bash Sale!  I just love the Long Ladies and their fabric shop!  These talented ladies have designed the cutest skirt and dress patterns and stock the freshest fabrics!  This wild and crazy fabric is Lauralee in Orange from the Superfly collection by Jennifer Paganelli.  HOT!

This quilt will be for sale in due time in my Etsy shop, Busy Hands Quilts!  I'll keep you posted!

Nana's Garden Basket Quilt Top is Finished!

This post may contain affiliate links. Thank you for your support!

Hot off Mrs.Bernina today is this Nana's Garden Basket Quilt top!  Her colors are a bit more vivid than this picture shows.  She is pastel for sure but not washed out.  This quilt top is an extra-long twin and will have a nice pillow tuck at the top.  She is third in line for Mrs.Singer.  She will soon some day be for sale in my Etsy shop, as Millie has decided she does not want this in her room after all!

First in line and currently on Mrs.Singer's rails is this Disappearing Nine Patch quilt top.  Mrs.Singer's began skipping stitches while working on this quilt, and after much fussing with needle, thread, and bobbin tension, I figured out that one of her belts was stretched out, and she wouldn't stitch with the floppy belt, go figure!  The belt is sitting on my desk, ready to be replaced on Mrs.Singer, hopefully solving the problem.

This is a twin quilt and will have delicious ric rac in the middle of the white sashings.  Not sure yet if the ric rac will be pink or turquoise.  This quilt will {hopefully} be for sale at Busy Hands Quilts very soon!

Tomorrow I'll post about what is second in line for Mrs.Singer ... a totally fun masculine quilt, not my usual style, but perfect for a Harley-lovin' tween to adult!

Nana's Garden Basket Quilt Progress

This post may contain affiliate links. Thank you for your support!

Earlier this summer, Millie picked out this fabric line, Nana's Garden by Red Rooster Fabrics, for a new quilt for her bunkbed as part of redecorating her room to be more old-fashioned.  I posted about that HERE.  She chose the Barbie's Basket pattern found in the book, Cutting Corners.  About a month after I bought the fabric, and the day I began cutting the pieces, she humbly told me she wasn't sure it was her favorite anymore; it didn't seem bright enough!  I went ahead and continued cutting and sewing anyway; telling her she could decide when it was all done, and if she still didn't like it, it could find a place in my Etsy shop, so no worries there, sweetie!

Today I finished the basket blocks and put it up on my design wall.  It is even sweeter than the picture portrays!  After assembling the quilt center, I'll add a thin green border and another wider pink floral border to bring it to twin size.  And ... Millie thinks it is beautiful!!

Picket Fence in Spring, a quilt in very similar colors, just sold in my Etsy shop!
